Virtual Duck Race

Organised by the wonderful team at Ponteland Rotary to raise funds for Dragonfly Cancer Trust!

If you live or work in the North East, below are two exciting ways you can show your support and get invoved ahead of the virtual race on Sunday 4th October.

Design A Boat Competition

The Rules

1. The competition is open to children aged between 5 – 11 years old (on August 31st 2020).
2. The design below is shown as an example, you may choose to design your own boat.
3. The boat must not be more than 45cm high and 45cm long.
4. The boat can be painted or decorated as desired, but must not be powered.
5. No keel, rudder or pull-string is required as the flow of the river will carry the boat downstream.
6. The use of plastic bottles or plastic bags is not allowed, the use of natural materials eg wood, cork, cotton is encouraged.
7. The boat must be able to float any entries which sink will be disqualified!
8. The boat must be clearly marked with your name, age and the name of your school.

Health, Safety and Environment

1. If you need to use a saw, knife or scissors to make your boat, ask an adult for help.
2. Do not use water based paint to decorate your boat as this may pollute the river.
3. The use of plasticine or putty for ballast must not be used as it may pollute the river. (You can make your ballast dough using flour and water.)

How To Enter

1. Take a photograph of your boat beside a 30cm ruler.
2. Send the photograph (.jpeg file,size of no greater than 15MB) in an e-mail to , with your name, age, a contact telephone number, and the name of your school.
3. Take your boat to school w/c Monday 21st September
4. Entries to be submitted by Friday 25th September 2020 at 6pm.

Spot the Duck

Rotary Ponteland have asked businesses in the Ponteland, Darras Hall and surrounding area to partner with them to sponsor a boat for a Business Boat Race to be held as part of their Duck races on Sunday October 4th.

The businesses have been offered a duck to place in their shop window or business premises and in return for a donation, they will have the opportunity to link an offer to their business via a “duck” sticker that will be also displayed on their premises.

Children are being challenged to “Spot the Duck” and list their sightings on the entry form which we will issued to the schools and will also be available on the Ponteland Rotary Facebook page here:

There will be small prizes offered to the winners, offered by local businesses or a small cash prize for first second and third place.
